We are grateful that we can also offer in-office procedures to relieve Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD) symptoms and improve meibum quality and production.
Intense pulsed light (IPL)
Intense pulsed light (IPL) is light that is pulsed at the surface of the skin. IPL use in aesthetics to target skin conditions like rosacea, age spots, sun damage, and fine lines is well documented. IPL in eyecare is used to reduce inflammation and improve gland function, which can lead to better tear stability. Radio frequency (RF) employs energy waves to stimulate the tissue around your eyes. The heat generated by the RF energy helps liquefy hardened meibum. Additionally, IPL and RF can help tighten eyelids and the skin around the eyes, improving lid function.

Low-level light therapy (LLLT)
Low-level light therapy (LLLT). While the IPL uses intense pulses of light, LLLT allows for longer exposure of low-level light on the face and over the closed eyelids. The most common wavelengths used are red, near infrared, and blue. Red and near infrared are used to decrease inflammation. The heat from the near infrared helps liquefy hardened meibomian, while blue light kills bacteria. We will often combine red, blue, and near infrared wavelengths.

MiBo Thermoflo
MiBo Thermoflo supplies continuous controlled heat that is applied to the outer skin of the eyelids along with ultrasound gel for a gentle massage. The heat is absorbed deep into the tissue and breaks down the hardened meibum. The gentle massage will help clear debris and hardened meibum.
Each treatment offers a different mechanism of action. There is an additive effect of combining all three to treat MGD.
Our goal is to treat MGD early when possible. If left untreated, the condition worsens until glands start dropping out. The glands are no longer able to secrete oil into the proper location, resulting in significant dry eye symptoms.
By addressing the underlying causes of dry eye and MGD, our goal is to help improve overall eye health and enhance your daily quality of life.
